I ran into a woman at the store after I went mountain-biking and we had an interesting exchange. She asked where I went, I told her and she said that she admired me for “getting out there.” I told her that fitness is for everybody and she said that fitness “just wasn’t her thing.”
I then told her that her body was designed to perform physical activity but she chuckled and said “not mine!” I didn’t press her anymore but it’s just a bit unsettling that there are so many people who view physical activity as a random hobby or interest that has no consequence if you don’t perform it. I am here to tell you that if you don’t get and stay active, there are numerous consequences that equate to poor-overall health, obesity, type II diabetes, heart disease, stroke and a long list of other very preventable ills!
Without giving your body what it was designed to perform, you reduce its vitality, longevity, ability to fight off and heal from sickness or injury and the list goes on! I have been in the fitness industry for over 15 years and have lost count of the people I have worked with who were given the “exercise or risk losing your life” ultimatum from their doctor. When working with these people, they routinely regretted not getting active sooner or more consistently and said that they were surprised at how rewarding it was once they learned that fitness was whatever they wanted it to be!
I am not listing all of the consequences of inactivity to scare you but rather highlight the fact that the majority of people of who don’t exercise were unaware that the world of fitness offers countless options for them to choose from and that little changes can make such huge differences. I challenge anyone who thinks that fitness “isn’t their thing” to open their minds and explore the diverse ways to get active and fit. You don’t have to exercise for hours on end, bench press 400 pounds or run Marathons to create and maintain good health. Start your journey NOW!
