Many people find it hard to master the mind games that determine success or failure with regard to a healthy lifestyle. It is a juggling act that many people simply can’t perform.
The good news is that there are people out there who have the ability to use their mind to avoid and overcome obstacles that most people trip over!
Rookie NBA player Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers is a shining example of this. He is one of the best rookies to come into the league in a very long time but don’t for second think it is because he is a “freak of nature” or “natural talent.”
His success is due to consistent hard work…end of story! Prior to this season, he would get up early in the morning for conditioning then would come back in the afternoon for shooting and weightlifting. Yes, he gets paid to do it but many pro athletes get paid to workout yet fail to do so!
In a recent article in the Oregonian newspaper in Portland by Joe Freeman, Lillard detailed one of the best examples of how the mind leads you to success…not talent, ability or natural gifts:
“You play so many games that it’s mentally challenging,” Lillard said of the NBA season. “like in my workouts, I really challenged myself mentally. There were a lot of times in my head when I was like ‘man I don’t want to get up. I don’t want to workout this morning.’ But my mind became strong enough to fight that. I was able to do it regardless of whether I wanted to or not. Then, once I got to the workout, even though I didn’t want to be there, I automatically snapped back into what I needed to be doing.”
Yes, he is a pro athlete but the structure of success doesn’t change. When it comes to hard work, it simply is what it is.
No matter what your schedule, what your situation, if you truly want to succeed, you will push past the things that most people use as excuses for not exercising or eating right and get it done.
